Welcome to Conwy

August 16, 2017 By Martin Connors Leave a Comment

We have prepared a short blog post that you may find helpful during your stay in Conwy.

A bit of History

Conwy castle was built by Edward I, during his conquest of Wales, between 1283 and 1289 and the town is fully enclosed by a defensive wall. Our cottage is located inside the town walls, and because Conwy is a small town, everything in the town is accessible on foot within 5 minutes or less.

A Panoramic View

A good way to get your bearings and see the whole town would be to take a walk along the town walls which will give you an incredible panoramic view over the town and the distant Snowdonia mountains.

The closest access point is only 50 meters from the cottage! From the front door, turn left and walk up the road to the Upper Gate archway where there are stairs that take you onto the wall. When on the wall, turn left and keep walking on the wall which will take you down to the river estuary quay and the castle.

For our guests, we will leave a Conwy Town Guide (Which includes a town map) and about 50 pamphlets of interesting places to visit. A visit to the castle is highly recommended.

Additionally, we will leave an ordinance survey map of the area and booklets with loads of popular walks from and around Conwy. These include short and long distances and variable degrees of difficulties.

Food and drink

There are over 20 different eating places in Conwy town serving a wide variety of food and snacks, these comprise of 6 pubs, 2 hotels, one Italian and two Indian restaurants and an excellent selection of cafés and coffee shops. In addition, there are three excellent fish and chip shops with eat in facilities. All less than a five minute walk away!!

Our personal favourites

Eating out (Best to book in advance). For your convenience, the links all open in a new browser window and take you to Trip Advisor reviews. (Excluding the Hesketh Arms as at the time of writing it had recently opened).

Special Interest

If you are a lover of chocolate, there is an artisan chocolatier, Baravelli’s less than 100 meters from the cottage on Bangor Road at the bottom of Upper Gate street on the left.

If you like breads freshly baked the traditional way and fine patisseries and pies, the Tan Lan Bakery is worth a visit and is situated on the corner of Lower High Street. We often have their Lamb Oggie for lunch – Traditional Welsh pasty with a lamb, swede, potato and hint of mint.

Finally, if you are a lover of real ale, The Albion Ale House is the best classic pub in the world (Daily Telegraph 2015) is only 50 metres from the cottage at the bottom of Upper Gate street. If you are not an expert, you can buy 3 x 1/3 pint tasters and they serve excellent traditional pub snacks.

A Few Things to See and Do in Conwy Town

New restaurant to open this week

May 24, 2017 By Martin Connors Leave a Comment

The Hesketh Arms is scheduled to open on 26th May, with an amazing restaurant, bar and boutique hotel rooms.

The owners also run the Cottage Loaf restaurant in Llandudno and if the food is anyway as good as this, then we are in for a real treat !!

This  is one of the many restaurants in Conwy town which is within a five minute walk from the cottage.
